Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We stress preventative maintenance on your HVAC system all the time, but this doesn’t only mean yearly tune-ups – it also means assessing your air filters. It’s a simple way to help keep your system working smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! This is the best time to inspect your filter, as the cold season comes to an end and heat is approaching. There are many benefits to switching out your air filter for a replacement, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to instigate a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Excess dirt that is built up on your filter can cause your whole system to work harder than it should to keep your home cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can escalate your utility bills and cause your system to overheat.

Improving indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it flows into your residence. As the filter gets older, the less effective it is in catching things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your house, especially if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures around the corner, pollen and mold are especially expected to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it moving in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy all through the allergy season.

Check your system or chat with your local HVAC expert for suggestions on how regularly you should be putting in a replacement filter. For most filters through Three Rivers Heating & Cooling, we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter you have access to. Not sure if it’s the best time to replace your air filter?
