Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a searing summer day in Portland, nothing feels worse than recognizing your AC isn’t functioning the way it was built to. The last thing you want to do is call for AC service. But your HVAC is a fairly complex system, so it can be hard to discern what’s driving the issue without training.

That’s why Three Rivers Heating & Cooling made this guide to help you see what might be happening with your air conditioner. From here, you’ll uncover some common reasons your space is feeling uncomfortable. And even though a few of these are straightforward DIY tasks, you could want to turn to a professional for air conditioner repair.

And if you need us, Three Rivers Heating & Cooling is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Portland.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Incorrect

Every home uses their thermostat a touch differently to suit their particular preferences. Even so, many households make the mistake of setting their system to “On” instead of “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to produce an air current even once you’ve gotten to your set temperature.

This can feel like your vents are pushing out warmish air, when actually it’s simply using the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Switch this setting and find out if things change.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two main areas to investigate for dirt or dust buildup when your cooling system doesn’t appear to be performing well.

First, check out your AC system’s filter. If you don’t switch your filter regularly, accumulated dirt can make it hard for air to travel through and cool your house. If your filter is noticeably dirty or dusty, it’s probably time for a change. (And for best operation, you have to change it about once every three months at least.)

If your filter is looking fine, head to your outside unit. See if there’s enough clearing around it and sweep away plants or debris stuck there. This element of your cooling system lets out the heat from inside your rooms. If the coils outside are closed off, you won’t be feeling comfortable in your home.

We advise booking professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your system running smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that cools down the air in your house. It moves between your inside and external system elements to soak up and discharge heat, to help your place get cool. If there is an opening somewhere, you won’t be feeling cool again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a drop in treated air, pricier monthly expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises arising from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant may be leaking, call Three Rivers Heating & Cooling for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Need to Be Replaced

Your AC is made up of a a handful of essential parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is not working, your home comfort suffers.

Our Three Rivers Heating & Cooling pros are well-trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you find and mend any issue.

5. Your Whole System Has to Be Replaced

If your equipment is upward of 10 years old, it may be time to think about new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it sadly won’t operate as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your space uncomfortable.

If your system is on the younger side but still isn’t cutting it, it could be too small for your living space. AC units are made in different sizes. An air conditioner that’s not big enough just can’t chill a home the way an appropriately sized air conditioner can.
