Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Portland just yet. Mother Nature has given us a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s in full control. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, hurting its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can keep a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are preparations you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Keep a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area routinely to ensure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have built up through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Portland will most likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can alter the performance of your air conditioner. At Three Rivers Heating & Cooling in Portland, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or buying a new system. Keeping you and your family safe and comfortable is our top priority. Give us a call at 503-213-4433 to get more information.
