AC Repair: Signs that Air Conditioner Repair is Needed

April 27, 2015

The days are getting longer and temperatures are getting warmer in Portland, which means you’re going to be relying on your air conditioner to keep comfortable. The more you depend on your air conditioner, the greater the chance you’ll be require AC repair.

We have a few warning signs to look out for and some helpful hints to let you know when it’s time to call in the professionals from Three Rivers Heating & Cooling to provide air conditioner service.

  • Air from vents isn’t cold – This is possibly one of the most notable signs that your air conditioner has the need for repair. The first thing you’ll want to do is check your thermostat fan setting and ensure that it’s set to “auto” rather than “on”. If it’s set to “on” your AC will continually blow air even if it’s not currently being cooled. If your air conditioner is set to “auto” and it isn’t able to reach the temperature set on your thermostat, that is a sign that it’s time to call and get it checked out.
  • Decreased air flow – This concern isn’t as easy to spot as the previous, but if you think the air coming from your vents isn’t flowing as strongly as it had previously, there could be an issue. If you haven’t changed your air filter for some time, that would be the first place to check, your problem could be as uncomplicated as a dirty air filter. If that’s not the case and you’re still experiencing problems, you’ll want to call the professionals at Three Rivers Heating & Cooling.
  • Strange sounds – Bizarre noises coming from your air conditioner isn’t a positive sign. If you hear any banging or rattling coming from your air conditioner, cranking the volume on your TV so you can’t hear the sounds isn’t going to solve the problem. The moving parts within your air conditioner have been known to come loose through wear and tear and will have to be repaired by a professional.

Try to be aware of how your air conditioner sounds and functions when it’s running well. This will make it easier to notice when things aren’t running correctly.

Keeping up with yearly maintenance is another way to identify any minor problems before they become major problems. If you haven’t yet made your your annual maintenance appointment with Three Rivers Heating & Cooling, now is the ideal time.
